PrimaryDnsSuffix

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\System\DNSclient

Data type Range Default value
REG_SZ DNS suffix (The local primary DNS suffix)

Description

Specifies the primary Domain Name System (DNS) suffix assigned to this computer by a Group Policy. The primary DNS suffix is used in DNS name registration and DNS name resolution.

This entry stores the setting of the Primary DNS Suffix Group Policy. When you enable the Primary DNS Suffix policy, Group Policy stores the value specified in the policy in NV PrimaryDnsSuffix. Then, when you restart Windows 2000, the policy setting is copied to the value of PrimaryDnsSuffix. If you disable the policy or do not configure it, Group Policy deletes the NV Primary DNS Suffix entry from the registry. Then, when you restart Windows 2000, this entry is deleted, too.

If this entry does not appear in the registry, the system uses the value of Domain as the primary DNS suffix. Domain stores the value displayed in the Primary DNS suffix of this computer box on the DNS Suffix and NetBIOS Computer Name dialog box in System in Control Panel.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Primary DNS Suffix policy (Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\DNS Client). In the text box provided, type the entire primary DNS suffix you want to assign, for example, reskit.com. The policy setting is temporarily stored in the value of NV PrimaryDnsSuffix and it is copied to PrimaryDnsSuffix when you restart Windows 2000.

Note Image Note

This entry has no effect on domain controllers.

This entry takes precedence over a user setting. When this entry appears in the registry, a policy is in effect and the system ignores the value of Domain and the Primary DNS suffix of this computer box on the DNS Suffix and NetBIOS Computer Name dialog box in System in Control Panel. If the computer uses a primary DNS suffix different from the one specified in the Primary DNS suffix of this computer box, check to see if this entry is in the registry.

The policy does not disable the Primary DNS suffix of this computer box that administrators use to change the primary DNS suffix of a computer. If administrators enters a suffix in the box, that suffix is stored in the value of Domain, but it is ignored while the policy is in effect.

Tip Image Tip

To change the primary DNS suffix of a computer without setting a policy, click System in Control Panel, click the Network Identification tab, click Properties, click More, and then enter a suffix in the Primary DNS suffix of this computer box.
