PreviousLocalHostname

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters

Data type Range Default value
REG_SZ Fully qualified domain name (Fully qualified domain name of the local computer)

Description

Stores the fully qualified domain name of the local computer. When the computer name or the primary DNS suffix changes, the DNS server uses the previous name to update resource records on primary, Active Directory–integrated zones.

The DNS server copies the name of the local computer (stored in the value of Hostname in Tcpip\Parameters) and the primary DNS suffix (stored in the value of PrimaryDnsSuffix) to the value of PreviousLocalHostname. If the computer name or primary DNS suffix changes, the DNS server searches SOA, NS and A resource records for the value of PreviousLocalHostname and replaces each instance with the new computer name. Then, it copies the new value of Hostname and PrimaryDnsSuffix to PreviousLocalHostname to prepare for future changes.

Activation method

DNS reads its registry entries only when it starts. If you change the value of this entry by editing the registry, the changes are not effective until you restart the DNS server.

Note Image Note

The DNS server updates resource records in accordance with the standards set for the zone and stored in the value of AutoConfigFileZones
