A subtree is a root, or primary division, of the registry.
The Windows 2000 registry is divided into five subtrees. These subtrees appear as windows in Regedt32, and as folders in Regedit. Subtrees do not contain configuration data; they contain the keys and subkeys in which the data is stored.
