ScavengingInterval

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters

Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD 0x0 | 0x1 - 0xFFFFFFFF hours 0x0

Description

Determines whether the scavenging feature of DNS is enabled and specifies how often the DNS server scavenges its database records.

When scavenging, the DNS server inspects the timestamps of resource records in the DNS database and deletes records that are out of date.

Value Meaning
0x0 Scavenging is disabled. The DNS server does not delete old resource records.
0x1 - 0xFFFFFFFF Enables scavenging and specifies the number of hours between each scavenging pass.

This entry stores the value you enter in the Enable automatic scavenging of stale records section in the DNS console.

By default, when you use the DNS console to enable scavenging on the DNS server, it configures DNS to perform scavenging once each week (0xA8 = 168 hours).

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use the DNS console. Right-click a server name, click Properties, and then click the Advanced tab. Select the Enable automatic scavenging of stale records check box and use the text boxes to determine how often DNS performs scavenging.

Activation method

DNS reads its registry entries only when it starts. You can change entries while the DNS server is running by using the DNS console. If you change entries by editing the registry, the changes are not effective until you restart the DNS server.

Note Image Note

DNS adds this entry to the registry until when you use the DNS console or Dnscmd.exe to enable scavenging and set a scavenging interval. If you disable scavenging, the DNS console sets the value of this entry to 0x0.

By default, scavenging is disabled. To enable the DNS scavenging feature on any zone, scavenging must be enabled on the server (by this entry) and enabled for the zone (by the value of Aging in a <Zone-name> subkey. If this entry specifies that scavenging is disabled on the DNS server, all values that configure scavenging for any zone are ignored.

Tip Image Tip

You can also use the DNS Server Troubleshooting Tool (Dnscmd.exe) in the \Support\Tools folder of the Windows 2000 operating system CD to change this value. For more information, see Windows 2000 Tools Help.

Caution Image Caution

DNS adds this entry to the registry when you use the DNS console or the DNS Server Troubleshooting Tool (Dnscmd.exe) to configure scavenging. Do not edit the registry to add, delete or change this value.
