Threshold

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DiskQuota

Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD (Not in registry) | 1 - 1000 (Not in registry.)

Description

Specifies the number of units in the default disk quota warning level for new users of an NTFS volume.

This entry is used in configuring the disk quota management feature of NTFS file system volumes. Along with the value of ThresholdUnits, this entry specifies the warning level, that is, the point at which the user's status in the Quota Entries window changes to indicate that the user is approaching the disk quota limit.

This entry stores the number you enter in the Default warning level Value box of the Default quota limit and warning level Group Policy. Group Policy adds Threshold to the registry when you enable the Default quota limit and warning level policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes this entry from the registry. Then, the system uses the amount of physical space on the volume as the disk quota warning level.

Value Meaning
(Not in registry) There is no specified disk quota warning level. The system uses the physical space on each NTFS volume as the warning level.
1 - 1000 The number of units in the disk quota warning level for new users.

The warning level established by the policy overrides the user settings for quota limits. Also, when you set a quota limit and warning level, the system disables the corresponding options in the Select the default quota limit for new users of this volume section on the Quota tab so administrators cannot change the values while a policy is in effect.

This entry applies to all new users as soon as they write to the volume. It does not affect disk quota warning levels for current users or affect customized limits and warning levels set for particular users (on the Quota tab in Volume Properties).

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Default quota limit and warning level policy (Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Disk Quotas).

Note Image Note

This entry is used only when disk quota management is enabled on the volume, either by a user setting or by a policy (see Enable).

Tip Image Tip

When you select a warning level, remember that the same warning level applies to all users on all volumes, regardless of actual volume size. Be sure to set the warning level so that it is reasonable for the range of volumes in the group.
