NoWelcomeScreen

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD 0 | 1 0

Description

Suppresses the Getting Started with Windows 2000 welcome screen. By default, this screen appears in Windows 2000 Professional each time a user logs on.

This entry stores the setting of the Don't display welcome screen at logon Group Policy in the User Configuration folder. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable the Don't display welcome screen at logon policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry and the system behaves as though the value is 0.

Value Meaning
0 (or not in registry) The policy is disabled or not configured. Getting Started with Windows 2000 appear in Windows 2000 Professional each time a user logs on.
1 The policy is enabled. Getting Started with Windows 2000 is not displayed automatically, although users can display it on demand.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Don't display welcome screen at logon policy (User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System).

Note Image Note

This entry takes precedence over a user setting. While the Don't display welcome screen at logon policy is enabled (the value of this entry is 1), the system ignores the setting of the Show this screen at startup check box on the welcome screen and the value of Show, which stores the setting.

This entry applies only to Windows 2000 Professional. It does not affect the Configure Your Server on a Windows 2000 Server welcome screen on Windows 2000 Server.

This entry can appear in both HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER. If the entry appears in both places, the value of the entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE takes precedence over the value in HKEY_CURRENT_USER.

Tip Image Tip

To display the welcome screen, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Getting Started. To suppress the welcome screen without setting a policy, clear the Show this screen at startup check box on the welcome screen.
