NoRecentDocsHistory

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD 0 | 1 0

Description

Prevents the system from saving shortcuts to documents the user has recently opened.

By default, the system saves a shortcut to each of the non-program files the user most recently opened and displays the shortcuts on the Start menu under Documents. The shortcuts let users easily review and restart recently used documents.

This entry stores the setting of the Do not keep history of recently opened documents Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable theDo not keep history of recently opened documents policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry and the system behaves as though the value is 0.

Value Meaning
0 (or not in registry) The policy is disabled or not configured. Document shortcuts are saved.
1 The policy is enabled. Document shortcuts are not saved.

You can use this policy, in coordination with the Remove Documents menu from Start Menu policy (NoRecentDocsMenu) and the Clear history of recently opened documents on exit policy (ClearRecentDocsOnExit) to manage access to recently opened files.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Do not keep history of recently opened documents policy (User Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Start Menu & Taskbar).

Note Image Note

If you set the value of this entry to 1 and do not set the value of NoRecentDocsMenu to 1, the Documents menu appears on the Start menu, but it is empty.
