PhysicalLocation

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers

Data type Range Default value
REG_SZ Location (up to 259 characters) (There is no default value for this entry)

Description

Specifies the string that appears in the Location field when users open the Find Printer dialog box (Start, Search, For printers).

Typically, this field displays the location of the user's computer, such as such as Building A/Floor 2. The system uses the location as one of its criteria when searching for nearby printers in Active Directory.

This entry stores the setting of the Computer location Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry when you configure the Computer location policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry.

If this entry does not appear in the registry, the Location field is blank. The user can type their location, or when Location Tracking is on, they can browse Active Directory to find their location. If no location is specified, the system uses the IP address and subnet mask of the computer to estimate its location.

When you provide a default location string, the user does not have to understand or remember the language or format of your printer location scheme. You can also use this entry to direct users to the closest printer or to direct them to a particular printer or group of printers that you want them to use.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Computer location policy (Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Printers).

Note Image Note

This entry is effective only when Location tracking is enabled (that is, the value of PhysicalLocationSupport is 1). Otherwise, this entry is ignored.

To turn Location Tracking on, enable the Pre-populate printer search location text policy, which sets the value of PhysicalLocationSupport to 1.
