PruningRetries

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers

Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD 0 - 6 2

Description

Specifies how many times the pruning service on a domain controller repeats its attempt to contact a computer before pruning the computer's printers.

This entry stores the setting of the Directory pruning retry Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry when you enable the Directory pruning retry policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry and the system behaves as though the value is 2.

The pruning service periodically contacts computers that have published printers to verify that the printers are still available for use. If a computer does not respond to the contact message, the message is repeated for the specified number of times. If the computer still fails to respond, then the pruning service prunes (deletes from Active Directory) printer objects the computer has published.

By default, the pruning service contacts computers every eight hours and allows two retries before deleting printers from Active Directory. You can use this policy to change the number of retries. To change the interval between attempts, use the Directory pruning interval policy (PruningInterval).

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Directory pruning retry policy (Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Printers).
