ForwardBufferMemory

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD 0x0 - 0xFFFFFFFF bytes (must be a multiple of 256) 0x12200 (74,240 bytes; enough for fifty 1480-byte packets, rounded to a multiple of 256)

Description

Determines the size of the buffer IP allocates to store packet data in the router packet queue. Because packet queue data buffers are 256 bytes long, the value of this entry must be a multiple of 256.

When this buffer space is filled, the router begins discarding packets at random from its queue. If packets are too large for the buffer, multiple buffers are chained together. If no buffers are allocated or if the IP router is not enabled, this entry is ignored.

Because packet headers are stored separately, buffer size is not affected by the IP header for a packet.
