PreferredServer

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NWCWorkstation\Parameters\Option\<SID>

Data type Range Default value
REG_SZ *Tree\Context or Server-name (Blank)

Description

Specifies the NetWare server or NDS tree and context to which this user logs on. If the specified server is not available, the system notifies the user and lets them select from among a list of other available servers. If the value of this entry is blank, the system does not log the user on to a NetWare server.

An asterisk (*) preceding the string indicates that the value is a Novell Directory Service (NDS) tree and context. Otherwise, the value indicates a NetWare 3.x server.

This entry stores the value of the Select Preferred Server, Tree, and Context text boxes in GSNW in Control Panel and on the Select NetWare Logon dialog box. The Select NetWare Logon dialog box appears the first time a user logs on after installing Client Service for NetWare.

Client Services for NetWare adds this entry to the registry with the value that the user enters in the dialog box options. If the user leaves the dialog box options blank, the value of this entry is blank. When this entry is not in the registry, Client Service for NetWare assumes that the user has logged on before.

Users can change the value of this entry by using GSNW or CSNW in Control Panel. If this value is blank when the user logs on again, the system displays a dialog box offering users a list of available servers. If the user selects a server, the name of that server is written to the value of this entry. If they do not, they are not logged on to a NetWare server.

Change method

To change the value of this entry on Windows 2000 Server, use GSNW in Control Panel. On Windows 2000 Professional, use CSNW in Control Panel. Do not edit the registry.

Note Image Note

When this entry stores an NDS tree and context, by default, the system logs the user on to the first server in that tree and context that responds to a logon request. To indicate a preferred server within the specified NDS tree/context, use the NDSPreferredServer entry.
