HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Zones\<zone-name>
Data type | Range | Default value |
---|---|---|
REG_SZ | DNS database file name ( *.dns) | There is no default value for this entry. |
Specifies the name of the file that stores the DNS database for the zone.
DNS reads the value of this entry when DNS is started by using entries from the registry (that is, the value of BootMethod is 2 or 3). If DNS is started by using values from a boot file, then the database file name specified in the boot file is stored in this entry, replacing any previous value.
This entry is required for standard primary zones (those not integrated with Active Directory). It is required for secondary zones only when they load from a zone file.
To change the value of this entry, use the DNS console. Right-click the zone name, click Properties, click the General tab. This entry corresponds to the Zone file name box. Do not change this value by editing the registry.
DNS reads its registry entries only when it starts. You can change entries while the DNS server is running by using the DNS snap-in. If you change entries by editing the registry, the changes are not effective until you restart the DNS server.
Caution
Do not change this value by editing the registry. If this entry is deleted or is set to an incorrect value, the DNS server will not load the zone.
