HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD 0 | 1 0

Description

Prevents the user from enabling or disabling Active Desktop or changing the Active Desktop configuration.

A value of 1 removes the Web tab from Display in Control Panel and removes the Active Desktop item from menu that appears when you right-click the desktop. As as result, users cannot enable or disable Active Desktop. If Active Desktop is already enabled, users cannot add, remove, or edit Web content or disable, lock, or synchronize Active Desktop components.

This entry stores the setting of the Prohibit changes Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable the policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry and the system behaves as though the value is 0.

Value Meaning
0 (or not in registry) The policy is disabled or not configured. Users can enable, disable and configure Active desktop configuration.
1 The policy is enabled. Users cannot enable or disable Active Desktop or reconfigure it. This value locks down the configuration you establish by using other entries in this subkey.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Prohibit changes policy (User Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Desktop\Active Desktop).
