HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DiskQuota

Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD (Not in registry) | 0 | 1 (Not in registry)

Description

Determines whether disk quota limits are enforced and prevents users from changing the setting.

This entry stores the setting of the Enforce disk quota limit Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable the Enforce disk quota limit policy. If you disable the policy, Group Policy sets the value of this entry to 0. If you set the policy to Not configured, Group Policy deletes this entry from the registry.

Value Meaning
(Not in registry) The policy is not configured. The disk quota limit is not enforced by default, but administrators can change the setting to enforce it.
0 The policy is disabled. The disk quota limit is not enforced and administrators cannot change the setting to enforce it.
1 The policy is enabled. The disk quota limit is enforced and administrators cannot change the setting to turn enforcement off.

To prevent administrators from changing the enforcement setting while a policy is in effect, the system disables the Deny disk space to users exceeding quota limit option on the Quota tab.

When users reach an enforced limit, the system responds as though the physical space on the volume were exhausted. When users reach an unenforced limit, their status in the Quota Entries window changes, but they can continue to write to the volume as long as physical space is available.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Enforce disk quota limit policy (Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Disk Quotas).

Note Image Note

This entry takes precedence over a user setting stored on the NTFS volume. When this entry appears in the registry, a policy is in effect and the system disables the Deny disk space to users exceeding quota limit option on the Quota tab. If the Quota tab does not operate as expected, check to see if this entry is in the registry.

This entry enforces disk quota limits, but does not establish or enforce a particular disk quota limit. To specify a disk quota limit, use the Default quota limit and warning level policy (stored in Limit, LimitUnits, Threshold, and ThresholdUnits). Otherwise, the system uses the physical space on the volume as the quota limit.

Tip Image Tip

To enforce disk quotas without setting a policy, in My Computer, right-click the name of an NTFS volume, click Properties, click the Quota tab, and then click the Deny disk space to users exceeding quota limit option.
