MOM Reporting
MOM
2005 contains a predefined set of reports that can be used to
monitor your current MOM 2005 environment and better prepare for
future needs. Other reports can be added as part of management
packs. Custom reports can be created using Microsoft Reporting
Services.

Note |
The creation of custom reports is beyond the
scope of this chapter.

Architecture
Reporting in MOM 2005 is managed by a
Reporting Server, which can be added to a MOM 2005 Management
Group. The MOM Reporting Server component should be installed on a
computer running Microsoft SQL Server. During installation, a
database called System Center Data Warehouse is created in the MOM
Reporting Server.
|
Note |
Read Chapter 3 for more information
about installing the MOM 2005 Reporting Server.
|
The MOM Reporting Server summarizes and aggregates
data stored in the MOM 2005 database and stores this aggregated
data in the System Center Data Warehouse. This is done through a
scheduled task created during the installation of the MOM Reporting
Server. The scheduled task is configured to be executed every day
at 1:00 a.m. by default. This means that the data viewed in a
report is not real-time data.
In fact,
it can be up to 24 hours old. Because of this latency period, it
may be desirable to change the frequency with which the scheduled
task is executed. To do so, perform the following steps:
-
In the Reporting Server, choose Start
All Programs Accessories System Tools, and click
Scheduled Tasks. The Scheduled Tasks window appears, as shown in
Figure 15-61.

-
Double-click the SystemCenterDTSPackageTask
scheduled task. The properties dialog box for the task appears, as
shown in Figure
15-62.

-
Click the Schedule tab. The schedule for the
selected task appears, as shown in Figure 15-63.

-
Select a frequency (Daily, Weekly, Monthly,
and so on) from the Schedule Task drop-down list box.
-
Specify the time to start the task in the
Start time textbox.
-
Select the desired options in the Schedule
Task group box according to the type of frequency selected in Step
4.
-
Click OK.
MOM Reporting Console
The MOM Reporting Console is a web-based
application built on top of SQL Server Reporting Services used to
manage and view MOM 2005 reports. To view the Reporting Console
from the MOM Reporting Server, perform the following steps:
-
In the Reporting Server, open the Start menu,
point to All Programs, Microsoft Operations Manager 2005, and click
Reporting Console.
-
If an authentication dialog box is displayed,
type your network credentials and click OK. The Reporting Console
appears, as shown in Figure 15-64.
Once the
MOM Reporting Server is installed, three report categories are
added to the server. More categories are added as management packs
are installed. The three basic categories are listed here:
-
Microsoft Operations
Manager: Contains reports used to verify the configuration of
MOM agents and Management Servers.
-
Operational Data
Reporting: Contains reports used to view collected events,
fired alerts, script and response errors, and overall MOM 2005
health.
-
Operational Health
Analysis: Contains reports used to view events and alerts per
computer, most common events and alerts, rule settings per computer
and computer group, and performance analysis.
To view a MOM 2005 report, perform the following
steps:
-
In the Reporting Server, open the Start menu,
point to All Programs, Microsoft Operations Manager 2005, and click
Reporting Console.
-
Click on one of the report categories. For
example, click on Microsoft Operations Manager. The list of reports
in that category will be displayed as shown in Figure 15-65.
