Device Configuration Wizard warning messages

The Additional Information tab (if present in the Device Properties dialog box) contains device warning messages.

The following list of the warning messages includes an explanation and a recommended action for each.

Table: Explanation of messages

Message

Description

The drive device does not support serialization

Explanation: The drive does not fully support device serialization.

Recommended action :

See About adding devices without discovery.

See Adding a tape drive.

Drive is standalone or in unknown robot

Explanation: The drive or the robot does not return a serial number. Therefore, you cannot determine the drive's location in the robot. The drive can be a standalone drive.

Note that some manufacturers do not support serial numbers. Although automatic device configuration does not function optimally, the drive or robot can be operated without a serial number.

Recommended action : Ask the manufacturer for a newer firmware version that returns serial numbers (if available) or operate the drive or robot without serial numbers.

Drives the SCSI adapter does not support pass-through (or pass-through path does not exist)

Explanation: A drive was found that does not have a SCSI pass-through path configured.

The following items may be possible causes for this message:

  • The drive is connected to an adapter that does not support SCSI pass through.

  • The pass-through path for this drive has not been defined.

Recommended action : Change the drive's adapter or define a pass-through path for the drive.

General auto-detection anomaly

This message applies only to NetBackup Enterprise Server.

Explanation: Network communication errors occur between media servers or between media servers and the EMM server.

Recommended action : Verify network connectivity and retry.

Illegal drive in the robot

Explanation: A drive is discovered in a robot whose type does not support that drive type. For example, a 4mm drive was discovered to be in a TLD robot.

Recommended action : Verify that NetBackup supports the drive.

NetBackup does not support this robotic library type as an NDMP device

Explanation: NetBackup for NDMP does not support this robotic library type as an NDMP device.

Recommended action : You must use a supported robot type with NDMP. Contact your NetBackup support representative or see the NetBackup release notes for a current list of supported NDMP robot types.

No configuration device file exists

Explanation: A device has been detected without the corresponding device file necessary to configure that device.

Recommended action : For information about how to create device files, see the appropriate chapter for your computer type in the NetBackup Device Configuration Guide.

No shared storage option license installed

This message applies only to NetBackup Enterprise Server.

Explanation: A drive was discovered on multiple hosts and one of those hosts does not have the SSO licensed installed.

Recommended action : Identify on which host the Shared Storage Option license is not installed and then install it there.

The robot device does not support serialization

Explanation: The robot does not fully support device serialization.

Recommended action :

See About adding devices without discovery.

See Adding a robot.

Robot drive number is unknown

Explanation: Either the drive or robot did not return a serial number. Note that some manufacturers do not support serial numbers. Although automatic device configuration does not function optimally, you can operate the drive or robot without a serial number.

Recommended action : Ask the manufacturer for a newer firmware version that returns serial numbers (if available) or operate the drive or robot without serial numbers.

Unable to determine compression device file

Explanation: A drive has been detected without the corresponding device file needed to enable hardware tape compression.

Recommended action : For information about how to create device files, refer to the appropriate chapter for your computer type in the NetBackup Device Configuration Guide.

Unable to determine drive type

Explanation: NetBackup does not recognize the drive. The drive cannot be auto-configured.

Recommended action : Get a new external-drive-mapping.txt file from the Symantec support Web site and then configure the drive manually.

Unable to determine robot type

Explanation: NetBackup does not recognize the robotic library. The robotic library cannot be auto-configured.

Recommended action : Configure the robotic library manually.
