Computer Types

There are two types of computers in Symantec LiveState Delivery. The computer type determines what information you need and what tasks you must perform to prepare the computer for integration into Symantec LiveState Delivery.

Description

Consistent Mode computers

You use Symantec LiveState Delivery to partition, format, and install software, including the operating system and agents. Symantec LiveState Delivery stores this information in the Configuration Database and maintains full control over Consistent Mode computers.

For example, if you use Symantec LiveState Delivery to partition a hard drive, then the system can inform you when there is not enough free disk space to perform a software installation.

Cooperative Mode computers

Symantec LiveState Delivery is informed, either by you manually, or upon searching the network, of the hardware and software configuration. Thereafter, you use Symantec LiveState Delivery to install software on the computer.

While software installation packages can be executed on Cooperative Mode computers, Cooperative Mode does not provide the full control you can exercise over Consistent Mode computers. For example, if Symantec LiveState Delivery does not partition the hard drive, the system cannot inform you about the amount of free disk space for a software installation.

To add a new computer as Cooperative Mode you set the Cooperative Mode checkbox in the Computer Properties dialog box when you add a new computer.

You can migrate a Cooperative Mode computer to a fully Consistent computer by resetting the computer. This reformats the computer’s hard drive and reinstalls the operating system and all software that is stored in the Configuration Database.

Cooperative Mode computers are subject to the following limitations and recommendations:

  • A Symantec LiveState Delivery-compatible boot PROM should be installed on each Cooperative Mode Computer on which you anticipate running Pre-OS tasks such as a BIOS flash.

  • The setup files for the computer's operating system must be copied to its hard disk, since some Configuration Packages access these files.

In addition you can identify both Consistent or Cooperative Mode computers as a mobile computer; that is a computer that is sometimes disconnected from the network and communicates with Symantec LiveState Delivery over a modem/ISDN.
