Setting up the Microsoft SMTP Server

Set up a Microsoft SMTP Server as the destination messaging server for any SMTP messages to be archived by Enterprise Vault. Do not configure this server to relay messages on to other messaging servers: it should only receive SMTP messages for archiving. Enterprise Vault captures the SMTP mail before it reaches the Microsoft SMTP Server's delivery area, and saves the mail to the SMTP archiving holding area.

Although you can install the Microsoft SMTP Server on the same computer as Enterprise Vault, it is more common to install it on a separate computer.

For information on the requirements for the Microsoft SMTP Server computer, see the section "Additional prerequisites for SMTP archiving" in the Installing and Configuring manual.

To set up the Microsoft SMTP Server, configure a Microsoft SMTP virtual server in IIS. Configure the Microsoft SMTP virtual server with a remote domain for each recipient address domain that is used in the messages.

For instructions on how to configure a Microsoft SMTP Server, see the Microsoft documentation.
