How to configure File System Archiving

There are several main stages to configuring File System Archiving:

Properties

File server (under Targets\File Servers)

  • Whether to archive the file server.

Volume (under Targets\File Servers\<server>)

  • The name of the File System Archiving task that processes the volume.

  • The File System Archiving policy that is to be applied when processing the volume.

  • Whether to archive this volume.

Folder (under Targets\File Servers\<server>\<volume>)

  • The name of the File System Archiving policy to be applied when processing the folder.

  • Whether to archive this folder.

  • Whether to archive subfolders of this folder.

Volume policy (under Policies\File)

Each volume must have a volume policy that defines the following:

  • Whether to create shortcuts.

  • Whether to use quotas.

  • The rules used to select files to archive.

  • The Retention Category to use for archived files.

  • Whether to archive files that have explicit permissions. When a file is archived, the version stored in the archive is given the same permissions as the folder that contained the original file. This could result in a change in permissions.

A volume is processed according to the task schedule, but can be processed using the Run Now task option.

You can apply the same volume policy to many volumes.

Folder policy (under Policies\File)

Optional. Used when you want to override the volume policy for specific folders.

The folder policy defines the following:

  • Whether to create shortcuts.

  • The rules used to select files to archive.

  • The Retention Category to use for archived files.

  • Whether to archive files that have explicit permissions.

You can apply the same folder policy to many folders.

File System Archiving Task (under Enterprise Vault Servers\<server>\Tasks)

Processes volume and folder targets. The task properties define the following:

  • Whether to run in report mode or normal mode.

  • Schedule settings, including the option for Run Now.

  • Settings to control generation of normal and pruning reports.

  • Synchronization schedule.

  • Pruning options and schedule.
