IDirectSound::GetCaps

The IDirectSound::GetCapsmethod retrieves the capabilities of the hardware device that is represented by the DirectSound object.

lpDSCaps
Address of the DSCAPSstructure to contain the capabilities of this sound device.

If the method succeeds, the return value is DS_OK.

If the method fails, the return value may be one of the following error values:

Remarks

Information retrieved in the DSCAPSstructure describes the maximum capabilities of the sound device and those currently available, such as the number of hardware mixing channels and the amount of on-board sound memory. You can use this information to fine-tune performance and optimize resource allocation.

Because of resource-sharing requirements, the maximum capabilities in one area might be available only at the cost of another area. For example, the maximum number of hardware-mixed streaming sound buffer might be available only if there are no hardware static sound buffers.

Note   This API is part of the complete Windows CE OS package as provided by Microsoft. The functionality of a particular platform is determined by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and some devices may not support this API.
