Description

Removes the Computers Near Me icon, and the icons representing computers in the workgroup, from My Network Places and from the Map Network Drive browser window.

This entry stores the setting of the No "Computers Near Me" in My Network Places Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable the policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry and the system behaves as though the value is 0.

Value Meaning
0 (or not in registry) The policy is disabled or not configured. The Computers Near Me icon appears when the computer is a member of a workgroup.
1 The policy is enabled.The Computers Near Me icon never appears.

The Computers Near Me icon appears only on computers in a workgroup. This entry does not affect computers that are members of a domain.

This entry does not prevent users from connecting to computers in their workgroup by other commonly used methods, such as typing the share name in the Run dialog box or the Map Network Drive dialog box.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the No "Computers Near Me" in My Network Places policy (User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer).

The Computers Near Me icon is designed for computers in a workgroup. This icon might appear on a computer in a domain if the system was upgraded from a pre-release version of Windows 2000.
