Description

Removes the Install Program As Other User dialog box for local and network installations. As a result, users cannot submit alternate logon credentials to install a program.

This entry stores the setting of the Do not request alternate credentials Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable the policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry and the system behaves as though the value is 0.

Value Meaning
0 (or not in registry) The policy is disabled or not configured. Users can submit alternate logon credentials to install a program.
1 The policy is enabled. Users cannot submit alternate logon credentials to install a program.

Install Program As Other User dialog box prompts the current user for the user name and password of an administrator. It appears when users who are not administrators try to install programs from local media.

Many programs can be installed only by an administrator. A value of 0 allows administrators who have logged on as regular users to install programs without logging off and logging on again using their administrator credentials

When the value of this entry is 1, and a user does not have sufficient permissions to install a program, the installation continues with the current user's logon credentials. As a result, the installation might fail, or it might complete but not include all features. Or, the installationt might appear to complete successfully, but the installed program might not operate correctly.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Do not request alternate credentials policy (User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer).

Note Image Note

By default, users are not prompted for alternate logon credentials when installing programs from a network share. If the value of this entry is 1, users are not prompted for administrator credentials on any installation and the PromptRunasInstallNetPath entry is ignored.
