NoResolveSearch

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD 0 | 1 0

Description

Prevents the system from conducting a comprehensive search of the target drive to resolve a shortcut.

By default, when the system cannot find the target file for a shortcut (.lnk), it searches all paths associated with the shortcut. If the target file is located on an NTFS partition, the system then uses the target's file ID to find a path. If the resulting path is not correct, it conducts a comprehensive search of the target drive in an attempt to find the file.

When the value of this entry is 1, the system does not conduct the final drive search. It just displays a message explaining that the file is not found.

This entry stores the setting of the Do not use the search-based method when resolving shell shortcuts Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 1 when you enable the policy. If you disable the policy or set it to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry and the system behaves as though the value is 0.

Value Meaning
0 (or not in registry) The policy is disabled or not configured. The system conducts a comprehensive search of the target drive.
1 The policy is enabled. The system does not conduct the final drive search. It just displays a message explaining that the file is not found.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the Do not use the search-based method when resolving shell shortcuts policy (User Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Start Menu & Taskbar).

Note Image Note

This entry only applies to target files on NTFS partitions. FAT partitions do not have this ID tracking and search capability.
