Data type | Range | Default value |
---|---|---|
REG_DWORD | 0 | 1 | 0 |
Determines whether the WINS server detects or ignores multicasts from other WINS servers.
Value | Meaning |
---|---|
0 | The WINS server ignores multicasts from other WINS servers on the network. |
1 | The WINS server detects multicasts from other WINS servers. |
If network routers support multicasting, the WINS server automatically finds other WINS servers on the network by listening for their multicasts (as defined by RFC1112) to the IP address 224.0.1.24. Any WINS servers found by accepting WINS multicasts are automatically configured as push and pull replication partners, with pull replication set to occur every two hours.
If network routers do not support multicasting, then even if the value of UseSelfFndPnrs is 1, the WINS server finds only WINS servers on its subnet.
By default, WINS maintains partnership data that is discovered through multicasting. A Microsoft WINS server that is discovered through multicasting is automatically removed as a replication partner when the WINS server shuts down successfully. However, if the WINS console has been used to change or view the found WINS server information, the partnership data is not removed.
Tip
To disable WINS multicasting, set the value of McastIntvl to 0xFFFFFFFF.
