Description

Determines whether Performance Monitor 4 (Perfmon4.exe) displays percentage values greater than 100%. By default, Performance Monitor 4 displays 100% whenever it reads a value greater than 100 for a percentage counter. Changing the default value enables Performance Monitor 4 to display more accurate data for counters that combine data from more than one component into a single value.

Value Meaning
0 Display percentages greater than 100%. The percentage values are limited to 100% times the number of components represented by the counter value.
1 Limit percentage values to 100%.

The default value prevents Performance Monitor 4 from displaying erroneous values. However, some counters display values that consist of data from more than one component. The total value for each component cannot be greater than 100%, but the total for all components can be as high as 100% times the number of components.

For example, the "Physical Disk: % Disk Time: Total" performance counter sums the percentage of active time of each physical disk. The resulting percentage is a simple sum of active time; it is not divided by the number of physical disks on the computer. As a result, the value reported to Performance Monitor 4 can be as great as 100% times the number of physical disks but, by default, Performance Monitor 4 cannot report a value greater than 100%. If the value of this entry is 1, Performance Monitor 4 will display values up to 100% times the number of physical disks on the computer.

Activation method

Changes to this value take effect the next time you start Performance Monitor 4.

Note Image Note

This entry is only applies to Performance Monitor 4 (Perfmon4.exe), a tool provided only on the Windows 2000 Resource Kit CD. It does not affect System Monitor. To configure System Monitor, use the System Monitor Properties dialog box.

Windows 2000 does not add this entry to the registry. You can add it by editing the registry or by using a program that edits the registry.

This entry changes the Performance Monitor 4 display for all performance objects and counters, not just those that display data for multiple components in a single value. Therefore, if the value of this entry is 0 and a single-component counter returns an erroneous value greater than 100%, Performance Monitor 4 will display it.

When Performance Monitor 4 calculates values for the Processor performance object, it divides the values it collects by the number of processors in the computer. Because the number of components is factored into the percentage calculation, the resulting percentage represents the percentage of total processor capacity. This value cannot be greater than 100% regardless of the value of this entry.
