Data type Range Default value
REG_DWORD 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 2

Description

Specifies which character standard is applied to DNS names. The standard determines which characters are permitted in DNS names and which are prohibited.

Value Meaning
0 RFC-compliant ANSI characters
1 Non-RFC-compliant ANSI characters
2 Multibyte UTF8 characters
3 Permit all characters.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use the DNS console. Right-click a DNS server, click Properties, click the Advanced tab and then, in the Name checking list box, click the name of the desired standard. Or, use Dnscmd.exe, a tool included with the Windows 2000 Support Tools. Using either method, your changes are effective immediately; you do not have to restart the DNS server.

Activation method

DNS reads its registry entries only when it starts. You can change entries while the DNS server is running by using the DNS console or Dnscmd.exe. If you change entries by editing the registry, the changes are not effective until you restart the DNS server.
