The following steps are necessary to create a Windows XP VPN Server.

  1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.

  2. Start the New Connection Wizard (see picture 1).

  3. Click on the Next button.

  4. Select Connect to the network at my workplace (see picture 2).

  5. Click on the Next button.

  6. Click on Virtual Private Network connection (see picture 3).

  7. Click on the Next button.

  8. Give the Connection a Name (see picture 4).

  9. Click on the Next button.

  10. If prompted, select whether or not you need to dial to the Internet before establishing a VPN connection and click on the Next button.

  11. Enter in the IP address of the server you want to connect to (see picture 5).

  12. Click on the Next button.

  13. On the Connection Availability choose for who the connection is created (see picture 6).

  14. Click on the Next button.

  15. Check whether you want to have an icon placed on the desktop and click on the Finish button (see picture 7).

Note: To make browsing work a little easier, you might want to edit the HOSTS file. This in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory for XP. Just add a line with the IP address of the server followed by it's name. Also, make sure the workgroup name is the same on all computers

The default Client TCP/IP setting might interfere with your ability to access the Internet while having a VPN connection. To correct this:

  1. Go to the properties for your VPN connection.
     
  2. Click on the Networking tab.
     
  3. Double click on TCP/IP.
     
  4. Click on the Advanced button.
     
  5. Uncheck "Use default gateway on remote computer".
