Windows Services for UNIX 3.0 provides many significant advancements that make it easier than ever before to integrate your Windows and UNIX networks and to leverage your existing UNIX expertise and applications.
The Interix subsystem provides a POSIX-compliant subsystem that runs UNIX shells, utilities, and applications natively alongside Windows applications. In addition to the subsystem, over 400 utilities are available, as well as a complete software development kit to make it easy to port your UNIX applications to run on Interix. Previously available as Microsoft Interix version 2.2, the version of Interix included with Windows Services for UNIX 3.0 incorporates several new features and performance enhancements. Now supports sticky, setuid, and setgid file modes as well as symbolic links. Features improved mapping between UNIX file modes and Windows permissions. Also supports file names using international character sets for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
In addition to the new features provided by Client for NFS, provides significant performance enhancements and support for server clusters.
Provides the same new features as Client for NFS, plus the ability to run on a server cluster.
Now supports Message Digest 5 (MD5) encryption for password synchronization, as well as easier migration of Network Information Service (NIS) maps and other performance enhancements.
Simple maps can now be created between multiple Windows and NIS domains. Also now provides high availability and load balancing by running in a server pool (using DNS round robin) or a server cluster.
Security is now improved by requiring client computers to be listed in the .maphosts file.
Supports Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) and Japanese character sets.
Supports IPv6 and features improved event logging and security enhancements.
