Administer Windows and UNIX passwords together
If you want to use Windows NT or Windows XP to administer
Windows and UNIX passwords, you must use Password Synchronization.
To administer Windows and UNIX passwords using Windows 2000,
you can use either Password Synchronization or Server for NIS. With
Server for NIS, you can also manage user, group, and other
accounts.
Give Windows users access to network file system (NFS)
files
You can use Client for NFS and Gateway for NFS separately or in
combination to give users access to NFS resources. To help you
decide which is more appropriate for your setting, consider the
following:
Gateway for NFS is more appropriate in settings where Windows
users need occasional access to a limited set of NFS directories.
Client for NFS works best when users need frequent access to a wide
range of NFS resources.
NFS resources shared through Gateway for NFS appear to Windows
users as ordinary shared directories. Windows users accessing NFS
resources through Client for NFS must learn some new but simple
methods for connecting to NFS directories.
Gateway for NFS gives Windows administrators a very high level
of control over the NFS resources available to Windows users.
Client for NFS depends on UNIX system administrators to control
access to NFS resources.
Whether you use Gateway for NFS or Client for NFS, User Name
Mapping allows Windows users to access NFS resources without having
to log on to UNIX servers.
Use the correct utilities to administer Windows Services for
UNIX
You cannot use Services for UNIX Administration or command-line
administrator utilities on a computer running Windows Services for
UNIX version 3.0 to administer computers running earlier versions
of Windows Services for UNIX, and you cannot use Services for UNIX
Administration or command-line utilities on a computer running
earlier versions of Windows Services for UNIX to administer Server
for NFS on a computer running Windows Services for UNIX 3.0. To
administer a remote computer running a different version of Windows
Services for UNIX than the version running on the computer you are
using, you must connect to the remote computer using Terminal
Server or, to run command-line utilities only, a remote command
shell utility such as rsh or Telnet Client.
