1. Open Services for UNIX Administration.
2. If necessary, connect to the remote computer you want to manage.
3. Click Telnet Server.
4. Click the Authentication tab, and select one or both authentication methods.
5. To save the settings, click Apply.

Caution

• When a client does not use NTLM authentication, it sends the user's password in plain text. Anyone capturing the packets of the authentication process can easily read the password and use it to gain unauthorized access to your network. The use of plain-text authentication is therefore highly discouraged, especially for virtual private network connections.

• Notes

  • To open Services for UNIX Administration, click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows Services for UNIX, and then click Services for UNIX Administration.
  • The NTLM authentication method allows clients that support NTLM authentication to log on without prompting users for a user name and password and to send encrypted authentication credentials to Telnet Server. The Plaintext authentication method allows clients to send credentials in plain (unencrypted) text.
  • You must select at least one authentication method. If both methods are selected, NTLM will be used if the Telnet client supports NTLM authentication.

• At a command prompt, type:

  tnadmin [computer] config sec={+|–}ntlm {+|–}passwd

Argument	Description
computer	The name of the remote computer you want to manage.
{+|–}ntlm	Use a plus sign (+) to turn on the ntlm authentication method, and a minus sign (–) to turn it off. The ntlm option allows clients that support NTLM authentication to log on without prompting users for a user name and password and to send encrypted authentication credentials to Telnet Server.
{+|–}passwd	Use a plus sign (+) to turn on the passwd authentication method, and a minus sign (–) to turn it off. The passwd option allows clients to send credentials in plain (unencrypted) text.
