Understanding locales

Currently, Interix supports only the C and POSIX locales as defined by International Standards Organization/American National Standards Institute (ISO/ANSI) C. Support for additional locales and custom local definitions is planned for a future release.

European keyboards are supported. Because the locales are not yet supported, not all utilities recognize the extended characters. Only the character set for the POSIX locale is guaranteed to work. For example, you can create a file name containing the Norwegian character å, but when you list it with the ls(1) command, the utility will display a ? instead of an å, because å is not a character in the POSIX locale.
