MS-DOS file names on NTFS volumes

By default, Windows generates MS-DOS short (8.3) file names on all NTFS file system volumes. When you create a file using a Windows application, it gets two file names: the long file name typed by you (up to 256 characters) and the 8.3 file name created by Windows.

POSIX applications on an NTFS volume do not generate 8.3 file names. If you type a file name that is longer than eight characters in a POSIX application, MS-DOS-based applications will not be able to recognize these file names. Use standard MS-DOS 8.3 naming conventions if you want to use files created by a POSIX application with an MS-DOS-based application.
