ident

NAME

ident - identify files

SYNOPSIS

ident [ -q ] [ file ... ]

DESCRIPTION

The ident(1) utility searches for all occurrences of the pattern $keyword:...$ in the named files or, if no file is specified, the standard input.

These patterns are normally inserted automatically by the revision control system (RCS) command co(1), but can also be inserted manually. The option -q suppresses the warning given if there are no patterns in a file.

The ident(1) utility works on text files as well as object files and dumps. For example, if the C program in f.c contains

char rcsid[] = "$Id: f.c,v 1.6 1999/06/09 14:30:10 johnmc Exp $";

and f.c is compiled into f.o, the command

$ ident  f.c  f.o
f.c:
	$Id: f.c,v 1.6 1999/06/09 14:30:10 johnmc Exp $
f.o:
	$Id: f.c,v 1.6 1999/06/09 14:30:10 johnmc Exp $

DIAGNOSTICS

The ident(1) utility exits with status 0 on success and 1 on failure.
