Summary

After reading Chapter 18 and this chapter, you should be well aware of the importance of creating and following an ongoing maintenance schedule for your SMS database. Chapter 18 focused on tasks that can be performed directly through the SMS Administrator Console. This chapter focused on the server running SQL and the tools and procedures that facilitate the management and maintenance of the server and the SMS database.

Up to this point in Part IV, we’ve explored ways to extract and report on data in the database, how to secure that data, and how to recover in the event of a failure of some kind. We also discussed ways to maintain the integrity of the SMS database and optimize the server running SQL that’s hosting that database.

The final chapter, Chapter 20, “Migration Issues,” examines the process of migrating from an SMS 2.0 environment to an SMS 2003 environment. You’ll learn how to support both versions of SMS within the same hierarchy and how to upgrade from SMS 2.0 to SMS 2003.
