Summary

In this chapter we have covered one of the most significant functions of SMS 2003-distributing and advertising packages and programs to clients. This function facilitates remote installation, updating, and maintenance of SMS client computers. However, you should think of SMS as more than a delivery system. As we've seen, it's still your responsibility as the SMS administrator to create (and script, if necessary) the packages you distribute.

A new feature of SMS 2003 is the integration of software update management, a set of tools and processes for keeping your SMS client computers current with security updates and new software updates that are developed after a software product is released. Chapter 13, 'Patch Management,' discusses this new functionality in more detail, including a description of how it integrates into the package distribution process.
