Summary

This chapter explored the ins and outs of the installation process for an SMS primary site server. We expressed the seriousness of the planning process and identified key questions to be asked that can help develop your implementation strategy not only in the area of domain and network considerations but also in hardware and software requirements, server and client considerations, personnel and training requirements, and testing. We have thoroughly examined the installation process itself, highlighting changes made to the server through services loaded; files, folders, and shares created; and registry keys added. We've even identified how to remove SMS from the server if the need arises.

Chapter 3 focuses on the different functional roles that the site server and other identified site systems can assume. We’ll define these roles and examine how to assign them to servers within our growing SMS site. Then in Chapter 4 we’ll look at how to link your SMS sites together to create a management hierarchy.
