Installation overview

Installing Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold Distributed Solution or WhatsUp Gold Premium Edition v11 is straightforward, though the Release Notes are required reading due to possible Service Pack and database issues.

The path you take to a successful installation may differ, depending on the following:

First-time install

If you are installing Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold Distributed Solution or WhatsUp Gold Premium Edition v11 for the first time, the installation program does the following with no actions required of you.

Read the System Requirements, then follow the steps in Installing or Upgrading.

Upgrade Notes

If you are upgrading from a previous version of WhatsUp Gold or WhatsUp Professional, the installation program detects an existing WhatsUp database and configures the new version to use that database, provided the following conditions are met:

If these conditions are not met, the installation program will notify you and direct you to perform a manual upgrade of the database.

Read the System Requirements, then follow the steps in Installing or Upgrading, and if necessary, configure the database manually as shown in Upgrading the Database Schema.

If you have an alternative database setup, after completing the WhatsUp Gold installation, you'll need to upgrade the WhatsUp database, as described in Upgrading a Non-Default Database Configuration.

Custom Database

Though we recommend that you use the default database (MSDE 2000), if you need to either use another database, or you need to run the database on another computer, you can set it up manually after the WhatsUp Gold or WhatsUp Gold Premium Edition installation has completed. For more information, see Alternative Database Setups.
