Configure client volumes screen

This screen appears only if one or more of your VxVM volumes (added to the Backup Selections list) were not configured with a mirror. If a volume already has a mirror configured that Snapshot Client can use for the snapshot, that volume is considered ready for backup. It does not appear on this screen.

The volume(s) that need mirrors or other configuration appear in the Volumes requiring snapshot configuration pane. You selected these volumes on the Backup Selections screen earlier in the wizard. The wizard configures a mirror or makes configuration changes as needed for these volumes, based on your selection.

To prepare a Veritas VxVM volume for the snapshot, select one of the following actions.

Prepare the volumes for space optimized instant snapshots

For snapshots of VxVM 4.0 or later volumes using the Instant Recovery feature. This volume is a type of snapshot volume that contains only the blocks that changed during the snapshot. It uses a storage cache (cache object) to store the blocks.

Space optimized snapshot volumes can be created very quickly and use a minimum of disk space.

For more information on space-optimized snapshots, see the Veritas Volume Manager 4.0 Administrator's Guide.

Create a full sized instant mirror for the volumes

For snapshots of VxVM 4.0 or later volumes using the Instant Recovery feature. This volume is a variation of the VxVM third-mirror volume snapshot. It makes a snapshot volume available for access as soon as the snapshot plexes are created. Like traditional VxVM third-mirror volumes, this volume can be moved into a separate disk group or turned into an independent volume after resynchronization.

For more information on full-sized mirror volumes, see the Veritas Volume Manager 4.0 Administrator's Guide.

Note:

To create the name of the mirror volume, 13 characters are appended to the volume name. The maximum length is 18 characters for a volume name with a full-sized instant mirror.

If the wizard reports that the volume name is too long, try one of the following:

  • To use a full-sized instant mirror for this volume, unmount the file system from the volume (if there is a file system). Then shorten the volume's name.

  • If the space-optimized feature of VxVM is licensed, select the option for space-optimized instant snapshots instead of full-sized instant mirror.

  • Select the option for split mirror

Create a split mirror for the volumes

For a traditional split-mirror configuration. The wizard creates a VxVM mirror for the volume. Later, when the policy is activated, the snapshot is created on the mirror.

Note:

Depending on the size of the volume, creation of the mirror can take some time. The wizard does not exit until the mirror is created.

Configure the volumes manually

Select this option to configure your volumes and mirrors manually, not with help from the wizard. Possible reasons for choosing this option are as follows:

  • Creation of the mirror takes too long and you want to complete the wizard now (see the note).

  • You want to customize your volume or your mirror configuration with a method that is not provided on this screen.

  • The NetBackup administrator is not authorized to change the client's storage configuration, and the storage administrator must make the configuration changes manually.

Note:

Although the wizard creates a valid policy with this option and does not create mirrors for the volumes that are listed above, you must properly configure the mirror(s) before you run a backup using this policy. Otherwise, the backup can fail.

A message states that mirror creation has started. This process may take some time. If you want to create the mirror now, select Yes. If not, select No and then select Configure the volumes manually.
