In a shared drive (Shared Storage Option) environment, some of the limitations are different than in a configuration without shared drives.
The following items are limitations for the Device Configuration Wizard:
Automatic configuration works better with the devices that support complete device serialization. To configure the devices completely, each robot and drive must report a unique serial number. Also, each robot must report the serial number of each of the drives in the robot.
Device discovery issues SCSI pass-through commands to the devices. The supported server platforms can require special operating system configuration.
Operating system configuration details for device discovery and the configuration requirements for devices to be recognized are available.
Some devices can be partially configured only, such as an unsupported robotic library or drive. You then must complete the configuration process manually.
If tape drives are in use by a backup or a restore or are offline, the wizard cannot discover and configure them.
After you add or remove devices from a SCSI bus, the operating system must detect the device changes before you configure devices in NetBackup. Often you must restart the operating system to begin its detection process.
The following factors apply to NetBackup Enterprise Server:
You cannot use this wizard to configure remote NDMP devices. If you do try, all the devices that are attached to NetBackup servers are configured as standard NetBackup devices. You cannot use them as remote NDMP devices until you configure them manually by using the NetBackup Administration Console.
For TLM discovery, the DAS/SDLC server version must support serialization of drives.
