Using the NDMP V4 snapshot extension, Snapshot Client can make snapshots of data on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) host. The snapshot is stored on the same NAS device that contains the primary client data. From the snapshot, you can restore individual files or roll back an entire volume, by means of Instant Recovery.
Important NAS notes are as follows:
NetBackup must have access to each NDMP host where a snapshot is created. In the Administration Console, use or the Device Configuration wizard to create this authorization.
The client data must reside on an NDMP host and be mounted on the client by means of NFS on UNIX or CIFS on Windows. For NFS mounts, do not auto mount the data; it must be hard (or manually) mounted.
The NDMP (NAS) host must support the NDMP protocol version V4 and the NDMP V4 snapshot extension. Note that some NAS vendors do not support snapshots. The NetBackup Snapshot Client Configuration document contains a list of NAS vendors that support snapshots:
Only the NetBackup binary catalog is supported. For the sites that run the NetBackup ASCII catalog, NetBackup automatically creates the NAS_Snapshot in the binary catalog format.
