Wired for Management

Symantec LiveState Delivery includes support for Intel’s Wired for Management (WfM) V1.1 baseline standard. This allows Symantec LiveState Delivery to more effectively support new managed computers without requiring the installation of boot PROMs or floppy disks on the computers. Symantec LiveState Delivery supports key components of the WfM initiative, including:

Wake on LAN

Remote Wake on LAN (WoL) from IBM is a component of Intel's Wired for Management. WoL allows you to schedule desktop management tasks at off-hours, minimizing the impact on network bandwidth, end-user productivity, and power use. You can remotely power-up a PC from a low-power consumption sleep state to a fully powered state.

The following requirements must be met to use the Remote Wake on LAN (WoL) feature:

You can install the Wakeup Proxy Server in a number of different locations. The recommended location is the Configuration Server that is running the IP Push notification service.

The default wakeup command is sent as a broadcast. Using this broadcast approach the Configuration Server sends a directed request to the proxy server asking it to wake up the computer with a specific MAC address. Then the proxy server sends the broadcast.

Pre-boot eXecution Environment

Pre-boot eXecution Environment (PXE) enables unattended operating system installation and configuration. It also enables disk formatting on new, out-of-the-box computers, or on misconfigured or corrupted PCs in a Help Desk environment. Symantec LiveState Delivery is PXE compatible and provides all of its standard pre-OS functionality to standard PCs with PXE-compatibleNICs or BIOS without requiring installation of a boot PROM or boot floppy.
