File Server Properties: General (NTFS)

Settings:

Archive this file server. Select this option to enable file archiving from this computer.

When you clear Archive this file server, the shortcuts that have already been created continue to work as normal. This setting merely prevents any new archiving from this file server.

When you want to start archiving again, check Archive this file server.

Configure pass-through recall. Select this option to configure pass-through recall with placeholder shortcuts. On receipt of a read request for a placeholder, Enterprise Vault passes data directly to the calling application. Enterprise Vault recalls the file to the file server, subject to permissions, only for a write request: for example, if the calling application requires a writeable file, or if the user attempts to save changes to the file.

You may want to configure pass-through recall in either of the following circumstances:

When you have placeholders on a read-only file system, such as a Windows shadow copy. A normal placeholder read fails for a read-only file system because Enterprise Vault cannot write the recalled file to the file system.
When there is limited space on the file server, or when users have strict quotas for space usage. Files that are recalled from placeholders normally occupy space on the target file system and count towards a user's space quota.

Pass-through recall disk cache location. Enterprise Vault requires a disk cache for the pass-through recall feature when it recalls files, to reduce recall times. For NTFS servers, you must specify a disk cache location on the file server. We recommend that you specify a location on a high-performance disk. The Vault Service account must have write permission on the folder.

Note:

For a file server cluster, the disk cache location may be a local path such as C:\FSACacheFolder. This path must be valid for a local disk on each cluster node. If the cluster configuration supports only one active node, you may alternatively specify a location on the cluster's shared disk. For example, you can use a shared disk location for an A/P, A/P/P, or A/P/P/P configuration, but not for an A/A/P configuration, where A represents an active node and P represents a passive node.

Disk cache size. Specify the size for the disk cache. We recommend that you make the cache size as large as possible.

Note the following if you configure pass-through recall:

Pass-through recall requires the FSA Agent to be installed on the NTFS file server. The FSA Agent must be the version that is provided with Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP1 or later.
For NTFS volumes, you must enable pass-through recall for each volume on which you want to use this feature.

To enable pass-through recall, select Enable pass-through recall on the General tab of the volume's properties.
If you add new NTFS volumes for archiving, you must enable pass-through recall on those volumes where required.
There is a setting Delete archived file when placeholder is deleted on the Shortcuts tab of the volume policy properties and the folder policy properties. That setting is ignored on NTFS volumes if pass-through recall is enabled on the volume.
Enterprise Vault trims the pass-through recall disk cache automatically when the disk cache becomes full. If you want to trim the cache manually, you must first stop the Enterprise Vault Placeholder service on the NTFS file server. Remember to restart the Placeholder service when you have finished deleting files from the cache.
If you configure pass-through recall for a file server cluster, all the cluster nodes must use identical pass-through recall settings.
