This introduction to status calculation is designed to explain how the status of services is calculated, and to show how you can influence the calculation. Status calculation must often account for many variables, and can become extremely complex. In order to demonstrate the concepts, this introduction will use only a small number of variables.

If you want to create service models that accurately represent the severity statuses of the services you are managing, then you will need a good understanding of the calculation principles explained in this introduction.

The table below represents a service, in this case a group of applications. The table includes five severity icons, and shows the number of active messages with each severity. (If you're unfamiliar with the meaning of the icons, hold the cursor over the icon for the name of the severity.)
