Remote Wakeup on LAN (WoL) is a component of Intel's Wired for Management initiative. WoL allows you to schedule desktop management tasks for off-hours, minimizing the impact on network bandwidth, end-user productivity, and power use. You can remotely power-up a PC from a low power consumption sleep state to a fully powered state.
The following requirements must be met to use the Remote Wakeup on LAN (WoL) feature:
Each computer must have a single NIC, either on-board or separate, that supports Wakeup on LAN.
A Wakeup Proxy Server must be installed on every network segment that contains CCM enabled computers. If there is a router between the CCM server and any computer, you need to have a proxy server on the network segment where the computer is located. The Wake-Up proxy services software is included with CCM.
You can install the Wakeup Proxy Server in a number of different locations. The recommended location is the CCM server that is running the IP Push notification service.
The default wakeup command is sent as a broadcast. Using this broadcast approach the CCM server sends a directed request to the proxy server asking it to wakeup the computer with a specific MAC address. Then the proxy server sends the broadcast.
