Backing up data by using the Agent for Microsoft Virtual Servers

Only the files that reside on the virtual server can be backed up by using the Agent for Microsoft Virtual Servers. Virtual machines that have iSCSI disks or remote .vhd files are excluded from the backup job.

When you create a backup job by using the Agent for Microsoft Virtual Servers, Full is the only available backup method.

You can include one of the following backup selections:

Microsoft Virtual Server

Backs up the application configuration settings and all virtual machines.

Initial Store

Backs up only the security settings.

Virtual Server Configuration

Backs up only the settings-related VNC and XML files.

Individual virtual machines

Backs up data that is stored on the selected virtual machines. If you select an individual virtual machine, the files that are to be backed up appear in the results pane. However, you cannot select individual files to include in or excluded from the backup.

To back up data by using the Agent for Microsoft Virtual Servers

  1. On the navigation bar, click the arrow next to Backup.

  2. Click New Backup Job.

  3. In the Properties pane, under Source, click Selections.

  4. Select the resource you want to back up.

  5. In the Properties pane, under Settings, click Microsoft Virtual Server.

  6. Select the appropriate options as follows:

    Exclude virtual machines that must be put in a saved state to back up

    Check this option to exclude from the backup all offline virtual machines that are in a running state when the backup begins.

    Use Backup Exec Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) to enable the restore of individual files and folders from Virtual Machines

    Check this option to enable the restore of individual files and folders from the backup.

    You must install the Remote Agent for Windows Systems on the virtual machine on which the data is to be restored.

  7. Start the backup job or select other backup options from the Properties pane.
