The Agent for VMware supports only a full image backup of the virtual machines. However, Backup Exec's Granular Recovery Technology lets you use the full image backup to restore individual files for virtual machines that use the Windows operating system.

When you create a backup job using the Agent for VMware, the following processes occur in the order listed:
The Backup Exec media server sends the job request to the VCB proxy server.
The VCB proxy server communicates with the VirtualCenter or the ESX server and captures an image of the virtual machines.
Data from the image is backed up to the Backup Exec media server.
When the backup job completes, the image file is deleted from the VCB proxy server.
