Symantec recommends the following practices for SharePoint Portal Server 2001:
Perform full backups of Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001, in addition to individual workspace backups. Even though workspace backups may be more useful for granular recovery of individual documents on a day-to-day basis, you must have a full backup to complete a disaster recovery.
Keep a record of all service packs and hotfixes that are installed on the SharePoint server when you perform backups. SharePoint restores may not complete successfully if the databases were backed up at a different patch level.
Ensure that the SHADOW folder is included in your selections when you back up workspace data. This folder contains previous versions of the current documents that exist in the workspace at the time of backup. While these previous versions cannot be restored directly into that workspace, it is possible to restore them to an alternate location, provided that the SHADOW folder is protected.
